The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s K9 Unit challenge coin is a commemorative item that honors the dedicated service of the department’s canine teams. Established in 1981 with just two handlers, the unit has grown to include a total of 14 handlers and their canine partners, specializing in patrol functions such as tracking, criminal apprehension, evidence location, and searches. The challenge coin symbolizes the team’s commitment to public safety and their role in supporting field deputies. The Stanislaus Sheriff K-9 Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supports the unit by providing supplemental training, enhancing safety with additional equipment, and caring for retired K-9s. Through community donations and fundraisers, the association educates the public about the vital role of police service dogs and honors their service.
